The surface is usually considered the end of things. Here, it seems to be the beginning.

Matter invades the face and replaces part of its anatomy. Skin, plaster, crack: they cease to behave as separate elements. What should conceal ends up revealing another kind of identity, less recognisable and perhaps more profound.

We look at a face. Matter gives us something else in return.
